We would like to thank Mrs Jane Roberts for confirming the authenticity of this work, which will be listed in the Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of Jacques Emile Blanche under number 1548.
The portrait depicts the mother of Blanche's chauffeur, Olivier Vallet, who worked alongside Blanche for over thirty years in Normandy, first at the Manoir du Tot and then at the Villa Sainte-Marie in Offranville, where his wife Marie was Rose's maid. Olivier is represented in the paintings "La Panne", which depict an imaginary scene in which Blanche and her friends, including Barrés and Anna de Noailles, are on an excursion in the Normandy countryside when their car breaks down. Olivier is crouched down trying to repair the breakdown (Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, inv B 1088, RM 232). Blanche loved cars and sometimes drove them himself. He was good friends with Olivier, who remained at his side until his death in 1942.
