Jean-Francis Auburtin (1866-1930) was one of the great decorators of the Third Republic. In 1914, the artist received a most prestigious commission: he was asked to decorate the main staircase of the Conseil d'Etat in Paris, built in 1765-1768 by Constant d'Ivry. He delivered a large composition to the glory of the Allies, accompanied by a Perseus and Andromeda. Although the project remained unfinished, Auburtin obtained a second commission in 1916. This time he was commissioned to decorate the Salon des Colonnes. He produced four panels with pastoral motifs. A sunset and a dance scene, framing a window, stand alongside an Idyll (or Le Matin) and Le Soir. The work that we have the honour of presenting for sale on 30 June 2026 is one of the studies that the artist produced in response to this commission for the Conseil d'Etat.
