"Une des plus remarquables artistes de ce temps", Guillaume Apollinaire, L'intransigeant, 25 February 1912.
This is how the critic and poet described the work of Jacqueline Marval, a woman and an artist who distinguished herself on the French and international scenes in the first half of the 20th century. Marie-Joséphine Vallet, better known as Jacqueline Marval, spent the early part of her life in Grenoble, where she married and later separated from her husband. She epitomised the image of a strong woman, trying to stand on her own two feet with her job as a waistcoat-maker, as well as a creative woman on the way to becoming an important artist of her time.
Our painting, Deux enfants, is the left-hand section cut out of a larger painting, as shown in the photograph in the archives held by the © Comité Jacqueline Marval
