Augustin LESAGE (Saint-Pierre-lez-Auchel 1876 - Burbure 1954) Composition, 1947 Oil on canvas mounted on isorel 76.5 x 98 cm Signed and dated lower right A Lesage 1947 The 1910s marked the beginning of his career as a painter, at a time when medicine and psychiatry were entering the field of artistic creation as a new field of study. In 1926, Lesage exhibited at the Salon des Beaux-Arts in the architecture section and, in November, at the Salon d'Automne. At the Beaux-Arts, Lesage presented two Compositions symboliques sur le monde spirituel (Symbolic compositions on the spiritual world), and at the Salon d'Automne L'esprit de la Pyramide (The Spirit of the Pyramid), which testified to the painter's interest in the divine and in Egypt, well beyond the concerns that artists associated with Art Brut had traditionally taken on. Using a conscientiously elaborate approach, he attempted to transcribe his experience emanating from a higher, divine principle, but also what he would have experienced in Egypt in a previous life. The works we are auctioning, Composition or The Thought of God and Composition from 1947, are perfectly in keeping with this train of thought. Although the artist is associated with the Art Brut movement, he pays particular attention to historical and iconographic knowledge. In Composition ou La pensée de Dieu, the figure of Christ carrying his cross blends with a skilfully orchestrated rhythm. The artist combines economy and precision of gesture, small, juxtaposed brushstrokes, figurative and mystical references... These works are symmetrically constructed, giving them an almost kaleidoscopic appearance.
