Description
Joan Miró (1893–1983)
The Hamlet, 1907
Black pencil and coloured pencils on paper.
Signed lower right "Joan Miró F." and dated 1907
23.5 x 30.5 cm
(Traces of glue, small tears at the edges and yellowing of the paper)
The earliest surviving sketchbooks by the painter date from 1905. In 1907, Miró enrolled at the Barcelona School of Commerce and mainly attended the Llotja School of Fine Arts.
Our drawing, like those from 1907, bears the influence of the Catalan artist Modest Urgell, a landscape painter known for his empty, desolate spaces.
Very similar drawings from 1907 by the young Miró are listed (see nos. 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48, pp. 33 and 34) in the book *Miró Drawings, Volume I*, by Jacques Dupin and Ariane Lelong-Mainaud, published by Succession Miró/Daniel Lelong, Paris.
