Bibliography: Félix Marcilhac, René Lalique – Catalogue raisonné de l'œuvre de verre, Les Éditions de l'amateur, Paris, 2011, ‘Necklaces’ section, pearl design listed under no. 1500 and reproduced on p. 557.
With this long necklace of moulded, pressed glass beads coloured throughout, René Lalique returns to his first love: jewellery. This is no longer the work of a goldsmith and jeweller as he might have been in the past, but rather a simplification of his approach to jewellery, giving it an entirely new dimension.
His first glass bead creations date from 1914 and continued until 1930. The inherent fragility of glass is here turned into irony to create a piece of jewellery that is precious in its material yet very refined in its design; the whole is linked together by trimmings with skilfully constructed knots.
