Josef HOFFMANN (after) & WITTMANN MÖBELWERKSTÄTTEN (manufacturer) ‘Fledermaus’ living room set in stained bentwood comprising a table with a slightly concave circular top incorporating a glass panel with a black enamelled geometric design, blue and cream on a slightly recessed four-legged base with tubular legs joined at the top and bottom by a small sphere on a circular brass-rimmed plinth, and four chairs with curved, enveloping backs and oval seats adorned with four small spheres on the underside, on a corner base with tubular legs joined by a low horseshoe-shaped crossbar. Backrest and seat upholstered in black and blue geometric patterned fabric on a cream background (wear and tear, scuffs). Manufacturer’s plate on the reverse of each piece. Table: Height 66 cm – Diameter 66 cm Chairs: Height 74 cm – Length 41 cm – Depth 46 cm Provenance: private collection, Austria. History: this set is a contemporary reissue of the designs created by Josef Hoffmann in 1907 for the décor of the Fledermaus cabaret in Vienna. Following an initial historical production by the firm Jacob & Josef Kohn, it is now Wittmann that offers reissues of these iconic designs.
