Description
Henri Lerolle, 1848–1929, Peasant Woman under the Trees, oil on canvas (crackle repair), signed lower right, dealer: Hardy Allan, 61 × 50 cm. Henri Lerolle was a French painter, collector and patron with close ties to the Impressionist, Symbolist and Nabi circles. A friend of Edgar Degas, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Claude Monet, Maurice Denis, Pierre Bonnard, Édouard Vuillard, Eugène Carrière, Pierre Puvis de Chavannes and Albert Besnard, he brought together in his Parisian townhouse many of the artistic, literary and musical figures of his time. An early collector of modern painting, he acquired works by Degas, Monet, Bonnard, Vuillard and Maurice Denis, whose early careers he supported. Close to Claude Debussy and Ernest Chausson, he occupied a unique place in Parisian artistic life at the end of the 19th century. His work, devoted mainly to landscapes, rural scenes and figures in the open air, developed a naturalistic sensibility with luminous tones, situated between Impressionism and Symbolism.
