Signed and dated lower left. 31 x 23 cm (in its original frame) No. P1968-11 from the Jules Breton Family Archives. Provenance: – Artist’s studio – ‘Atelier de l’Artiste’ sale, Galerie Georges Petit, Paris, 2 and 3 June 1911 (lot 168, p. 65 of the catalogue) sold for 1,500 francs to Charles Maniez – Sale of the Charles Maniez Collection, Galerie Georges Petit, Paris, 3 December 1918 (lot 5 in the catalogue) Bibliography: - Delouche Catalogue Raisonné, 1978 (reproduced in Volume II under no. 809, p. 736) Note: Rediscovery of this painting, which had been missing since its last auction in 1918. Study for the painting “A Great Breton Pardon of 1869”, held at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana. Letter from Jules Breton to his brother, Louis, September 1868: “A very large number of figures, a significant group of about fifteen, and a dense crowd numbering at least 300 to 400 people”
