Description
Constantin KOROVINE (1861–1939) View of Paris, Avenue de Versailles, at night – c. 1937. Oil on cardboard. Signed “Constantin Korovine Paris” in the lower left-hand corner. Studio stamps and annotated “Paris 1937” on the reverse. 33 x 41 cm. Provenance: Estate of a Russian aristocrat who settled in the countryside near Grasse. Lot presented in collaboration with Mr Maxime Charron, art expert (06 50 00 65 51) Note: Having settled in Paris in 1923, Constantin Korovine found in the French capital an ideal setting in which to continue his exploration of light and urban life. Painted in 1937, this night-time view of the Avenue de Versailles is part of this late Parisian period, during which the artist transposed the Impressionist legacy into a free, dynamic and intensely vivid vision. At that time, Korovine seemed almost alone in capturing Paris with such pictorial immediacy. With bold, sweeping brushstrokes, he brings the illuminated cafés, shop signs, cars and passers-by to life within the same nocturnal atmosphere. The city is no longer merely a topographical motif, but a shifting spectacle, criss-crossed by reflections and electric lights. Through this rapid and luminous style, Korovine transforms the avenue into a veritable pictorial celebration, capturing the capital’s nocturnal modernity with rare precision.
