Description
Dmitry PLAVINSKY (1937–2012)*. Cubist cityscape – 1959. Pastel on paper. Monogrammed and dated in the lower right-hand corner. 31 x 43 cm. Provenance: Estate of Mrs Anne-Marie Day. Acquired directly from the artist at the height of the turbulent years by his parents, who were journalists in the Soviet Union at the time. Note: Dmitry PLAVINSKY (1937–2012) studied stage design from 1951 to 1956 in Moscow. From 1957 onwards, he took part in non-conformist exhibitions. From 1991, he lived and worked in New York whilst maintaining a studio in Moscow. A painter of highly ornamental still lifes, he drew inspiration from his fascination with the mysteries of botany and geology, as well as with ancient scripts, and very often used the technique of inlay on wooden panels. His works can be found at the Tretyakov Gallery (Moscow), the Russian Museum (St Petersburg), the Pushkin Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). Resold at a frenzied auction by Mr Belkacem Oud Mebarek in Paris
