Description
Alexander SOFRONOFF (1901–1948) Portrait of a Manchu. Oil on canvas mounted on panel. Signed lower right. 38 x 28 cm. Note: A painter of Russian origin, trained as an artist and theatre set designer, Sofronoof was forced to leave Russia at the time of the 1917 Revolution. He arrived in Manchuria via the Trans-Siberian Railway in 1922, where he worked as a set designer for the theatre. In 1931, he fled the Japanese invasion and settled in Shanghai, then in Ceylon, where he worked with the Shanghai Russian Ballet Company as a set painter. Eight exhibitions were dedicated to him in Ceylon.
