Description
Anton Rooskens (1906–1976) Composition 1973 Gouache on paper, signed and dated in the lower right-hand corner, mounted on board 78 x 53 cm Condition report: Cracks, crease marks and a loss in the top right-hand corner of the board Anton Rooskens was a self-taught Dutch painter, known for his expressive and spontaneous style.
In 1945, the exhibition ‘L’Art en liberté’, held in Amsterdam, introduced him to primitive art. This discovery had a profound impact on his work and had a lasting influence on his painting style, particularly through his interest in forms, symbols and a freer, more instinctive mode of expression.
In the 1950s, his work was fully in keeping with the spirit of the CoBrA movement, which emphasised spontaneity, raw energy and a rejection of traditional artistic conventions. Rooskens went on to develop a highly gestural, free and expressive style of painting, in which forms seem to emerge instinctively.
Subsequently, he pursued a more personal artistic direction. His compositions gradually became more structured, whilst retaining the spontaneity and gestural freedom that characterise his work.
