Description
Isa Sator (born 1963) Winged Mare, from the Armageddon series, 2019. Acrylic on canvas, signed lower right, countersigned and titled on the reverse. 100 x 100 cm. Isa Sator is a French painter, colourist and draughtswoman born in 1963.
A former lawyer at the Paris Bar, she has devoted herself entirely to painting since the 2000s, developing a pictorial language in which colour acts as a vital force and a vehicle for dialogue with the irrational.
*La Jument Ailée* belongs to the *Armageddon* series, painted in 2019.
The large central canvas of the series, a ‘Guernica’ measuring nearly six metres, was signed at the very moment Notre-Dame de Paris was burning.
Isa Sator works in a swarm-like manner: around this central fresco, peripheral canvases emerge, each isolating and extending one of its fragments.
The Winged Mare is one such work, a female figure that has broken free from the fresco.
The winged horse is an ancient figure, found in many mythologies, where it embodies elevation and a form of inner sovereignty beyond the reach of earthly constraints.
Isa Sator appropriates it as a symbol of liberated femininity: here, to fly is to rise above that which holds one back.
In the fresco, she stands above the chaos.
This work is seeking its guardian.
