Stencil and Indian ink on paper.
25.5 x 19 cm
Like Kazimir Malevich, Mayakovsky and many others, whom he began to associate with from 1919 onwards, Lebedev welcomed the 1917 Revolution with enthusiasm. The stencils we present here, the designs for which date from between 1920 and 1922, bear witness to the hope that the renewal of visual language—sparked by the brief period of effervescence following the end of Tsarism—kindled in many artists. Solidly structured, with a simple and effective colour scheme, sailors, Red Guards, peasants, etc. show us all the qualities of Lebedev, who was a prolific poster artist and illustrator before being forced to renounce his art in 1936.
