After training as an artist in Japan, Shoichi Hasegawa held his first solo exhibition in 1957.
In 1961, he moved to Paris and worked in printmaking at Atelier 17 under Stanley William Hayter, a studio that played a significant role in the history of modern printmaking. This training left a lasting mark on his work, although Hasegawa did not limit himself to printmaking.
His work is based on an abstract language composed of signs, traces and forms reminiscent of writing. He combines colour, material and space with great freedom. Without directly imitating Japanese calligraphy, he retains its rhythm and spirit, which he contrasts with the explorations of Western abstraction.
From the 1960s onwards, Shoichi Hasegawa exhibited regularly in France and abroad. He took part in several exhibitions and biennials dedicated to contemporary printmaking and, in 1968, was awarded first prize for printmaking at the International Exhibition in Como.
His work is now held in several public collections, notably at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
