We would like to thank Barberine d’Ornano-Osterlind, president of the
Osterlind Association, who kindly confirmed the authenticity of this work and informed us that: ‘From November 1949 to early April 1950, at the invitation of the Alliance Française, Anders Osterlind stayed in Tunisia with his friend Bernard de Mallerais. He returned with a prolific and magnificent body of work (the catalogue raisonné lists thirty pieces): the white terraces of Sidi Bou Saïd; a view of Cap Bon, black or almost black, beneath a midnight-blue sky; the overwhelming slopes of the ochre lands of the Far South, crowned with their white marabouts. Their gravity and their austerity are what strike one most of all. A solo exhibition of 47 paintings at the Alliance Française in Tunis, including eight Tunisian works (this painting is not among them), crowns this intense body of work.
