Description
Dado (1933–2010) The Gardener, 1962 Oil on canvas Signed and dated top right 114 x 145 cm Provenance: - Galerie Arditti, Paris - Daniel Cordier Gallery, Paris - Cordier & Warren Gallery, New York - Paul and Jacqueline Canfrère Collection Note: Formerly in the d.b.c. collection: inventory number: 01/046/D2 This magnificent painting is part of Dado’s Pointillist period; he was a great admirer of Seurat (he refers to this artist in ‘A Swim at Asnières’, as recorded by Michel Faucher This Pointillist series was produced over a very short period, 1961–1962. One of its masterpieces is ‘Adam and Eve’. Here, we may assume that real people are depicted, such as the little girl in the apron on the left, likely a reference to a village woman observed in Courcelles-les-Gisors – those anonymous figures from the Vexin region whom Dado loved so much to portray. Plant motifs and toys also feature, including this blue creature (a centaur?) on a skateboard. We would like to thank Ms Amarante Szidon for the information she has kindly provided us with regarding this work.
