Description
French school of the late 19th or early 20th century, in the style of Jean-François MILLET (1814–1875) Study of a half-nude woman Oil on panel. Bears a forged mark of Jean-François Millet’s studio in the lower left-hand corner (L.3730). 35 x 26.5 cm Bears an ink number on the reverse: KMI 92. Note: Robert Herbert, in his article published in the *Revue de l’Art* in 1973 on forgeries of Millet, lists this stamp in his Appendix II: ‘Fake stamps and poor facsimiles’ and designates it ‘forgery type 2’. According to him, it was probably made around 1920–1935 or perhaps slightly earlier. This stamp, affixed to a variety of drawings, landscapes or figures, very few of which bear any resemblance to Millet’s style, is the work of an unscrupulous craftsman who, in the 1920s or 1930s, affixed this forged stamp to unsigned nineteenth-century works.
