Description
‘Polichinelle’ whistle
Made from elephant ivory of the ‘Proboscidean Elephantidae spp.’ type (Elephas maximus, Loxodonta africana or Loxodonta cyclotis).
A flattened, full-relief statuette forming the handle, depicting Polichinelle in 17th-century Commedia dell’arte costume, wearing a cap, a large, loose tunic with a ruffled collar, and baggy trousers. The figure is masked, plays the mandolin and appears to be singing as his mouth is open, his face turned slightly upwards. He stands on a tapered plinth, adorned with classical decoration, which serves as the body of the whistle. This is extended by the mouthpiece of the whistle, which is non-functional.
Mid-19th century
H. 12.2 cm
Total gross weight: 37.60 grams
