Description
Doll’s bed Made of carved oak. The sides are carved in bas-relief on one side, depicting a ram flanked by two sheepdogs, followed by Roty’s ‘Sower’ on one upright and a depiction of a war memorial to the female soldiers of 1870, featuring the personification of the Republic holding a dying soldier in her arms. Vine tendrils in the spandrels. On the other side, the portrait of an elderly, bearded man is framed by a touching scene of a soldier giving a drink to a wounded fellow soldier, whilst on the opposite side a view of a vaulted cellar with numerous barrels is visible. The personification of the Nation is carved on one upright, and another war memorial is carved on the other upright. The following inscriptions are carved into the base: ‘NARCISSE VASSEUR // 1902’.
