Description
Alfred ELY-MONBET (1879–1915)
Small tall sideboard
In carved oak. Rich carved decoration adorns the entire front of the piece. The openwork front features a carved panel depicting a lively scene, showing a Breton woman spinning wool at her spinning wheel, with a gentleman smoking a pipe beside her. This panel is surmounted by an openwork motif of turned spindles. The date ‘1911’ is carved into a shield set into the lower crossbar. The upper part of the side panels features a Breton woman and a Breton man in traditional costume, carved in high relief, followed by a frieze of ermine spots within an interlaced rope pattern punctuated by flowers. The sides are plain. A plaque nailed to one side reads: ‘ART BRETON // ALL FURNITURE // A.ELY-MONBET // SCULPTOR // St GWENOLE WORKSHOP-SCHOOL // CAUREL (C-d’A)’. Inside the cabinet are four softwood shelves. Comes with its key, which works.
