Description
Castelet
Made of polychrome and gilded wood, paper, cardboard, plaster and fabric. A wooden box depicting a scene from an opera, the title of which is shown on the pediment within a scalloped cartouche. Two classical columns on either side frame the stage, with the lower section imitating marble. The backdrop, embossed and enhanced with gouache, is adorned with a lively rural scene, featuring an inn and a river, set against a landscape background. A second, removable back panel features, on one side, a classical interior with panelling and a central fireplace, and on the other, a forest. Two narrow removable borders are joined to the edge of the forest-themed back panel. The canvas curtain is decorated with a lyre and a classical floral frieze.
