Description
Icon Made of mother-of-pearl and wood. Rectangular in shape with a scalloped pediment, it is composed of engraved mother-of-pearl panels highlighted in black. The border is emphasised by a frieze of striations highlighted in red and edged with serrations. Depicts the Nativity surmounted by a group of holy figures with halos. The scene is mounted on a thick wooden board with a red patina. It has a metal hanging ring at the top and a hole on the back. It bears handwritten inscriptions on two pieces of paper glued to the back: ‘Brought back by Mr Gillot de Kerartène // Honorary Interpreter of the Holy Land // Bethlehem 1830 // Photograph enclosed’ and on the other piece of paper ‘4 June 1943 // With much love on the occasion of // our little girl’s 21st birthday // Denise Paravey (signature)”.
