Description
‘La coupo’ A reproduction of the cup presented to the Félibrige in 1867. Card mounted on a PVC board with a hanging system on the back. 20th century H. 80 cm – W. 53 cm SS Faded colours and soiling. For information: “This cup was presented to the Félibrige in gratitude for the hospitality shown in Avignon by the Provençal Félibres, led by Jean Brunet, to the Catalan poet and federalist Victor Balaguer, who was temporarily exiled by Queen Isabella II for political reasons, and also as a token of the fraternal friendship that has always bound Catalonia and Provence, which are so closely related through history and language. It was solemnly presented during a banquet held in 1867 at the Hôtel du Louvre in Avignon. This finely engraved silver cup, 16.5 cm high, is designed as follows: an antique-style bowl supported by a palm tree. Leaning against this palm tree, standing and gazing at one another, are two graceful allegorical figures who, like two sisters, represent Catalonia and Provence. It was created by the Avignon-based sculptor and statuary Louis Guillaume Fulconis, who, upon learning of the patriotic purpose of his work, refused any payment without hesitation. It was subsequently produced in Paris, by the silversmith Jarry, due to events in Spain, which prevented the work from being carried out in Barcelona. ” Information taken from the website: https://www.felibrige.org/la-coupo/histoire-de-la-coupe/
