Description
DANY LARTIGUE (1921–2017), ‘Portrait on the Balcony, Cannes, the Grand Hotel’, 1941, Oil on board, signed lower right, titled, dated and located on the reverse. Slight wear. H: 106 W: 76 cm Framed. Note: He was the son of the great photographer Jacques-Henri Lartigue and the grandson of the composer André Messager. A versatile artist, he made his mark as a painter, writer and butterfly enthusiast, going so far as to found the Maison des Papillons in Saint-Tropez. Very close to the world of Marcel Pagnol, Dany Lartigue notably illustrated Pagnol’s *Souvenirs d’enfance* (Childhood Memories), helping to bring the author’s Provençal poetry to life through images. Having settled in Saint-Tropez before the war and then permanently after the 1940s, Dany Lartigue became one of the village’s most iconic figures. His paintings, his butterfly collection and his writings all bear witness to his deep attachment to the light, the landscapes and the spirit of Saint-Tropez.
