La Petite Gironde was founded in 1872 as a lower-cost version of the French daily newspaper for the South-West and Midi regions, LA GIRONDE. The Chapon family took over the paper in the 1920s. Neither La Petite Gironde nor Le Grand Écho du Midi survived the orders of 6 May 1944, 22 and 26 August 1944 and 30 September 1944, the latter decreeing the dissolution of titles that had appeared during the Occupation. La Petite Gironde, which had continued to appear, was banned from re-publishing after the Liberation. It gave way to Sud-Ouest in 1944 (source Wikipedia).
