The RICARD company was founded in Marseilles in July 1932 by Paul RICARD, who was 23 years old and had a passion for art; he started out in the wine trade. He met Mr Espanet, a former hairdresser who had become a distiller. Mr Espanet entrusted him with the recipe for his 60° pastis, which he made himself using distillers' spirit, fennel and various herbs. It was then that Paul Ricard decided to create his own pastis, and the Ricard empire was born. Paul Ricard died on 7 November 1997 in Signes. He is now buried on the Ile des Embiez, facing the open sea.
