In 1888, John Boyd Dunlop invented the pneumatic tyre in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
While watching his grandson ride his bicycle, he came up with the idea of gluing strips of rubber to the wooden wheels and blowing air through them.
This innovation made transport more comfortable and also meant that less energy was required to move forward. The first pneumatic tyre was born and JB Dunlop registered his first patent on 23 July 1888 (source: dunlop.eu).
