It was a Dutch chemist, Carl Julius Ferdinand Riep, who invented a quick-drying linseed oil paint in 1888. He called it Riepolin, adding to his name the suffix "olin" derived from "olie", oil. Ten years later, Riepolin was bought by a French company, Lefranc & Cie, and became Ripolin.
That same year, the artist Eugène Vavasseur signed a poster depicting three house painters, which quickly became one of the greatest success stories in the history of advertising. The three brothers in the poster were christened Riri, Polo and Lino (source: ripolin.fr).
