Very good condition - a fantastic blue with exceptional original brilliance. Discreet localized fading at the edges.
Laundry blue, generally composed of ultramarine blue (a finely ground pigment historically derived from lapis lazuli), came in the form of powder, pellets or enclosed in a small cloth bag, here in liquid form. Added to the rinse water, it compensated for the grey or yellow colour of the linen and gave it a brighter whiteness, through a visual rather than chemical effect.
