Description
CACHOU LAJAUNIE -c.1930
Very rare original Bakelite advertising collector/dispenser. 23.2 x 16.5 cm. "Patented S.G.D.G Siegel - Paris ".
Combining a coin dish and a spring-loaded dispenser, the cylindrical rear reservoir allows boxes to be dispensed progressively by means of a large spring.
The front has an embossed inscription "Cachou Lajaunie", accompanied by a medallion, inserted in the housing provided, in lithographed sheet metal.
An ingenious and decorative object.
- Good condition - discolouration to the embossed lettering, a discreet crack to the Bakelite on the back.
Created in 1880 by pharmacist Leon Lajaunie, Cachou Lajaunie is a black liquorice pastille, presented in its iconic round yellow metal box.
Taken over by the Sirven brothers in 1904, the brand was widely distributed in tobacconists' shops and very early on developed innovative advertising, notably with Leonetto Cappiello's posters.
Having become a symbol of Toulouse, the product spanned the XXᵉ century before ceasing production in 2024.
