CACHOU LAJAUNIE - 1911-12
"GUIDE-ALBUM de la Cie des Chemins de Fer du Midi" (Guide to the Chemins de Fer du Midi)
4th year, 1911-1912. Toulouse, imprimerie B. Sirven; published by Jules Petit, exclusive concessionaire for advertising in the carriages of the Midi and State networks.
326 pages, numerous illustrations, maps and reproductions of posters.
An interesting tourist and advertising guide for first-class travellers on the Midi network.
It provides a detailed presentation of the regions served (South-West, Pyrenees, Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts, Basque coast), with historical and geographical notes on the main towns (Bordeaux, Arcachon, Biarritz, etc.), itineraries (in particular to Spain and Portugal) and practical information (fares, season tickets, spas and seaside resorts, pilgrimages, excursions).
The book is richly illustrated with numerous period advertisements (Cachou Lajaunie, wines, Menier chocolate, regional press, local products....).
A complete copy in fair condition. Wear from use, some pages partially detached, a few marginal tears, annotations in coloured pencil on some pages.
-Nevertheless well preserved.
Created in 1880 by the pharmacist Leon Lajaunie, Cachou Lajaunie is a black liquorice pastille presented in its emblematic round yellow tin.
Taken over by the Sirven brothers in 1904, the brand was widely distributed in tobacconists' shops and very early on developed innovative advertising, notably with Leonetto Cappiello's posters.
Having become a symbol of Toulouse, the product spanned the XXᵉ century before ceasing production in 2024.
