Description
CACHOU LAJAUNIE -c.1930
Very rare original cast aluminium and glazed coin collector/advertising display. Approximately 29 x 22 cm. "SIEGEL - Paris . Breveté S.G.D.G".
Embossed with the words "Cachou Lajaunie" on the front. The glazed top reveals a compartmentalised interior with a red patina background for displaying the boxes. An ingenious sliding drawer is used to distribute them.
A handsome countertop object, combining a utilitarian and promotional function.
In fine original condition, complete. The cast aluminium has a beautiful patina. The inscription "Cachou Lajaunie" has lost its red tint in places. The glass is in good condition. The drawer shows wear to the red pictorial layer, which has been partially altered. Attractive presentation.
Created in 1880 by pharmacist Leon Lajaunie, Cachou Lajaunie is a black liquorice pastille presented in its iconic round yellow tin.
Taken over by the Sirven brothers in 1904, the brand was widely distributed in tobacconists' shops and very early on developed innovative advertising, notably with Leonetto Cappiello's posters.
Having become a symbol of Toulouse, the product spanned the XXᵉ century before ceasing production in 2024.
