Description
CHOCOLAT MENIER - c.1900 "Avoiding counterfeits Rare original enamelled advertising plaque. 39 x 20 cm. "Enamel Japy Signed "D'après Firmin Bouisset", represents his eldest daughter Yvonne Bouisset with her umbrella. This plate was affixed to the chocolate dispensers in the Paris metro system. The oval-shaped hole on the left-hand side provided access to the lock. Good overall condition. The colours are well preserved and retain a good intensity, while the surface has an appreciable sheen. There are a few slight traces of oxidation and minor alterations, mainly around the edges, which remain discreet. Depigmentation is visible in the lower part, around the basket and feet. The overall presentation is good, with no major flaws. Menier, founded in Paris in 1816 by Jean Antoine Brutus Menier, started out as a chemist before turning to chocolate. Set up in Noisiel in 1825, the company launched the first industrial chocolate bar in 1836. After becoming a major player in the chocolate industry in the 19th century, the company declined after 1945, before becoming part of a number of major groups, although it remains an iconic brand. Seine-et-Marne/Ile-de-France
