Description
PETITE MARMITE - THE SHEEP WHO LAUGHS - c.1934 "After Benjamin RABIER Rare original advertising enamelled plate. 37 x 24 cm. "Émaillerie Alsacienne de Strasbourg". Exceptional state of preservation. The colours, which are extremely fresh, have retained all their intensity, and the reds, which are particularly bright, have been superbly preserved. The enamel has remarkable depth and perfect brilliance. The plate retains its original four brass eyelets in the corners. There are only two very discreet jumps in the enamel at the top and bottom left edges, which have no effect on the visual quality of this first-rate piece. This time, our hilarious cow is stirring an instant cheese soup "created by La Vache Qui Rit". Launched in 1934 by The Laughing Cow, "La Petite Marmite" is a rare variation of the brand's instant soup, combining meat, vegetables and melted cheese. Depicting the famous red cow as a cook in front of a copper pot, this 1930s campaign had a limited run. The story begins in Orgelet in the Jura, where Jules Bel set up as a master refiner at the age of 23 (1865). He was only 55 when, in 1897, he handed the business over to his two sons, Henri and Léon, aged 29 and 19 respectively. The company then became "Bel Frères". In 1897, the company moved to Lons-le-Saunier, taking advantage of its proximity to the railway line and the Montmorot saltworks. Henri left the company in 1908, and the name was changed to "Léon Bel, Gruyère en gros". On 16 April 1921, Léon Bel registered the trademark La Vache qui rit. He drew inspiration from the RVF B70 badge to design a cow with a hilarious expression, later to be indelibly stamped by Benjamin Rabier. Jura/Bourgogne-Franche-Comté
