Description
CHAMPAGNE G.H.MUMM & cie - c.1900 Signed "Maurice NEUMONT Very rare original lithographed advertising plate on black iron. 46 x 32 cm. - Good condition. Rich, fresh and luminous colours, with a beautiful original brilliance. Localized surface alterations in the lower right and left parts, with a weakening of the pictorial layer, the main decoration, preserved, remains clearly legible. A few discreet marks around the edges. A richly detailed scene showing the bourgeoisie and their servants being carried away in an elegant, fast-moving red automobile. Here, the brand is targeting a wealthy clientele, surrounded by servants, embodying a certain modernity. The serious driver rubs shoulders with a master dressed as a pilot but as a passenger, while on the roof, more unbridled cooks indulge in champagne tasting. G.H. Mumm, champagne house founded in 1827 in Reims by the Mumm family, descended from a line active in the wine trade since 1761. Developed in the 19th century around an exceptional vineyard and a commitment to quality ("Only the best"), it quickly made a name for itself internationally. Its emblematic Cordon Rouge (C.R), created in 1876, became a major symbol of champagne. Maurice NEUMONT (1868-1930) was a French painter, lithographer, illustrator and poster artist who studied with Jean-Léon Gérôme at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Active in the Salon des artistes français, he distinguished himself as a poster artist, particularly during the First World War with propaganda works. A co-founder of the République libre de Montmartre, he was also a member of the Société des peintres-lithographes and a knight of the Légion d'honneur.
