The story begins in 1830, when Dr Adémar Juppet was working on developing an aperitif based on cinchona and wine.
After working long nights on the development of this aperitif, his eyesight began to fail. He then remembered the biblical epitaph in which the Archangel St Raphael cured Tobias of his blindness.
Wishing to regain his sight in order to complete his research, Dr Juppet placed his new elixir under the celestial invocation of the Archangel. His wish was granted, and he succeeded in developing his recipe, naming his creation St Raphaël.
1932 marked a new turning point in the iconographic history of St Raphaël with the appearance of the two waiters in the brand's various creations. These two silhouettes, also known as "Twins", were inspired by two actors: Armand Bernard and Paul Marien (known as "Pauley").
The black and white photographs, not included in the sale, are an integral part of the description and provide a useful illustration of the lot.
