The Maharaja is Air India's famous mascot, created in 1946 by Bobby Kooka and designed by Umesh Rao.
With his curved moustache, turban and theatrical attitudes, this emblematic character embodies Indian hospitality and the refinement associated with the airline.
Founded in 1932 by J. R. D. Tata as part of the Tata Group, Air India has become India's national airline and one of the symbols of Asian air transport. In 1948, it inaugurated its first long-haul service between Bombay and London aboard the Malabar Princess. The development of its international network and the arrival of Boeing 747s in the 1970s subsequently contributed to its prestigious image, notably through its famous "Palace in the Sky" service.
