Eclipse cream shoe polish was produced by the Société Générale des Cirages Français, founded in 1881.
In 1881, the articles of association were drawn up for the general union of French shoe polishers, formerly the Jacquand père et fils, Berthoud et cie successeurs and A. Jacquot et cie réunie.
The brand name cirage crème éclipse was listed in 1921 in the Recueil officiel des marques de fabrique et de commerce.
It was George Méliès, the famous French film director, who produced the Eclipse cream advert in 1900, based on the now emblematic slogan: "Eclipse cream eclipses all shoe polish".
Société Générale des Cirages Français is the heir to companies dating back to 1825, including the Forges d'Hennebont (Morbihan) and several brands of shoe polish, including Jacquand, Jacquot, Dubois and Berthoud.
