Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) was founded in 1946 by the merger of the airlines of Denmark, Norway and Sweden.
It quickly became a major player in European air transport and a pioneer in long-haul flights, notably to North America and Asia.
Today, SAS remains Scandinavia's leading airline.
The McDonnell Douglas DC-9-20 (or DC-9-21) was developed at the request of Scandinavian Airlines System to improve take-off and landing performance.
It combines the fuselage of the DC-9-10 with the wings and engines of the DC-9-30. It entered service in 1969.
