Description
MAGIC CITY - c.1911 Exceptional advertising enamelled thermometer. 100 x 18 cm. "Émaillage 34 Bd. De Clichy". Signed " GRÜN " Jules Alexandre ( 1868 - 1938 born in Paris ) Presents a beautiful state of conservation. The colours of the figures are well preserved, and the whole retains a very nice shine. The whole is harmonious and beautifully presented for this iconic piece which has never gone on sale. The wording "Magic City", originally located above the heart, has been rubbed off, a common practice at the time to emphasise the decorative aspect. The capillary and protective grille have been replaced. There are a few minor chips along the top edge, as well as a discreet sunburst on the thermometer numbers. Magic City, the famous Belle Époque amusement park located on the Quai d'Orsay opposite the Pont de l'Alma in Paris, was opened in 1911 on the initiative of Ernest Cognacq (owner of the Samaritaine). Designed as a vast entertainment area for adults, it offered shows, attractions and curiosities, some of them exotic, in a setting inspired by the great European parks. Very popular in the 1910s, the site became a ball venue after the First World War, before gradually disappearing from 1926 and being destroyed in 1942. Le Bottin mondain is a French directory created in 1903, listing members of high society. Ile de France
