Description
CHINESE WIRE - c.1910-20 Original lithographed and embossed advertising sheet. 45 x 30 cm. "Ets.Champenois - Paris". In very good condition - the colours are bold, deep and well-defined, with a beautiful sheen. The embossed relief further enhances the overall quality. There is some discrete oxidation around the edges and a slight vertical trace in the background, on the left-hand side, but this has not affected the figure. All in all, this is a very attractive piece. Depicts a high Chinese dignitary of the Mandarin type in richly decorated traditional costume. At the time, exoticism was the stuff of dreams and China was known for its silk, hence the depiction of this character. The Chinese symbols could be translated as "Happiness, longevity and prosperity under celestial protection and to the virtuous man: happiness, longevity and peace". The "Fil au Chinois" brand was created in 1847 by Philibert Vrau, but its roots go back to 1816 with the foundation of a sewing thread factory in Lille. Renowned for the exceptional quality of its products, the brand has established itself on the international market. Nord/Hauts-de-France/mercerie
