[KSCHESSINSKA]
Programme for performances at the Hermitage Theatre in St Petersburg, 15 February 1902. The programme included "La vengeance d'Amour", a one-act opera, and "Les élèves de Monsieur Dupré", a two-act ballet in which Mathilde Kschessinska played the role of Camargo. Lithographed bi-sheet, 35 x 25 cm (closed), A.B.E. (slight folds to corners and traces of wear).
During the winter season, from Epiphany to Lent, sometimes twice a week, the Hermitage Theatre gave performances for members of the imperial family, mainly short ballets and plays. For a time, their interpretation was supervised by Sergey Diaghilev. On 15 February 1902, Mathilde Kschessinska was dancing when she was six months pregnant, and this performance for the Emperor was the last before the birth of her son. In her memoirs, the ballerina wrote: "Before Lent, we gave a charming ballet, Les Élèves de M. Dupré, in two tableaux, with choreography by Petipa and music by Léo Delibes. I danced the role of Camargo and, in the first act, I wore a ravishing soubrette costume, and in the second, a tunic. The stage was close to the seats in the front row, where the Emperor, Empress and members of the imperial family were seated. I had to think very carefully about all my movements so that my changed silhouette, which could only be seen in profile, would not be noticed. This show marked the end of my season. I could dance no more, the term was already at the six-month mark."
