François Nicolas RISS (1804-1886), studio of
Portrait of Prince Dimitri Vladimirovich Galitzine (1771-1844) in bust wearing the collar of the Order of Saint Andrew, in front of the Kremlin.
Oil on canvas (slight restorations and lining).
Circa 1835.
In a fine giltwood frame decorated with a frieze of gilt foliage, silver laurel leaves at the top, and surmounted by a stylized polychrome double-headed eagle.

History
Prince Dimitri Vladimirovich Galitzine (1771-1844) enlisted in the mounted guard regiment and distinguished himself at the Battle of Praga under General Suvorov in 1794. He was promoted to lieutenant-general in 1800, then general of cavalry in 1814 after the capture of Paris. He ended his military career by being appointed military governor of Moscow on 6 January 1820 by Tsar Alexander I. He died in Paris in 1844.
