History
These two plates in ouraline, or uranium glass, come from the famous Hesse-Kassel service made by the Imperial Manufactory in Saint Petersburg around 1843-1844. This prestigious service was created for the wedding of Grand Duchess Alexandra Nikolaïevna, daughter of Tsar Nicholas I, to Prince Frederick of Hesse-Kassel, and was presented as a gift by the Tsar. Their delicate green-yellow hue, obtained using uranium oxide, was particularly appreciated in the imperial decorative arts of the 19th century. These pieces were part of a sumptuous imperial dowry to celebrate the union between the Romanov dynasty and the House of Hesse-Kassel. The history of this service is marked by the tragic fate of Alexandra Nikolaïevna, who died a few months after her marriage in 1844.
