The famous director and showman Nikita Baliev, creator of the legendary cabaret ‘The Bat’, invited the artist Mstislav Dobuzinsky to take up the post of chief set designer for the 1926 season. In collaboration with the choreographer Boris Romanov and the playwright Pyotr Potemkin, the artist prepared a new cabaret programme, which was presented to the public on 1 October 1926. In 1927, this programme was performed on Broadway during an American tour.
Provenance: Princess Olga Alexandrovna Lieven (1856–1923), wife of Vasily Petrovich Davydov, grandson of the Decembrists V. L. Davydov and S. P. Trubetskoy. Subsequently passed down through the family.
