[SCIENCE] Evgeny Ganike (1869–1948) A collection of archives and printed works by the Russian scientist and biologist Evgueni Ganike. Comprising: • Album ‘Pavlov’s Tower of Silence’ (titled ‘Drawings for the work of T.M. Manuilov’). A selection of photographs and copies of drawings of designs for mechanisms and machines, photographs of the building and premises of the autonomous scientific and research complex on Aptekarsky Island in Saint Petersburg, built for Academician I.A. Pavlov. Photographs of apparatus; one of the photographs shows I. Pavlov’s famous dogs. Even before the revolution, Academician Pavlov had commissioned the construction of a building housing a laboratory equipped with sensory deprivation chambers for dogs. The building was constructed according to the plans of architect A.A. Poleshchuk between 1912 and 1914. This building was also nicknamed ‘The Tower of Silence’. The album provides a rare insight into the development of this unique scientific project, 25 x 35 cm (cover as is), 90 x 140 mm (photographs). • Two notebooks containing notes on the course ‘Physiology and Histology of Plants’ and the lectures by Palladin and Borodine (1892), handwritten. Arithmetic notebook, handwritten in ink. Notebook with notes on the agricultural anthology, 1904. Handwritten notebook on the geometric isomerism of carbon compounds, 1891; three separate prints of E.A. Ganike’s article “On the viscometric determination of enzymes”. Evgeny Alexandrovich Ganike (1869–1948) – Russian scientist and biologist, author of several inventions in the field of equipment for physiological research, one of I. P. A collection of photographs and copies of drawings of designs for mechanisms and machines, photographs of the building and premises of the autonomous research complex on Aptekarsky Island, built for Academician I.A. It was understood that, for the sake of the experiment’s integrity, the subjects had to be isolated from light, sound, smell, vibrations, etc. The building was constructed to a design by architect A.A. Poleshchuk between 1912 and 1914. The building also came to be known as the ‘Tower of Silence’. The album is a rare record of the development of this unique scientific project, 25 × 35 cm (cover intact), 90 × 140 mm (photographs). • Two notebooks of lecture notes for the course ‘Plant Physiology and Histology’ and for the course by Palladin and Borodin (1892), handwritten.
