[HISTORY]
SMIRNOV S.
Memorial Church to Sailors Who Died in the War with Japan in 1904–1905. Built in 1910–1911. Published by the Committee for the Construction of the Church, 1915. [6], XXII, XVII, [4], 82 pp., [57] ill., photographic portraits of monarchs, 31×24.5 cm, owner’s binding (with a fragment of the publisher’s cover), general condition poor (tear along the spine, block loose). Handwritten bookplate ‘N. Kotlyarevsky’ on the half-title page. A rarity.
The book examines the history of the construction of the ‘Spas-na-Vodakh’ church, built in 1911 in memory of all the sailors who perished during the Russo-Japanese War, but above all in memory of the destruction of the Russian fleet at the Battle of Tsushima on 14–15 May 1905. The church, built in the Vladimir-Suzdal architectural style of the pre-Mongol period, stands in St Petersburg at the end of the Angliyskaya Embankment, not far from the shipyards. Over time, it has become a monument to all naval servicemen who lost their lives at sea for Russia.
