Kovalevsky’s Printing House, Besançon, 1937. Cover by V.N. Landshevski. 46 pp., hardback, 19 x 12 cm, in good overall condition. Print run of 550 copies, of which 50 are numbered. Second book of poems, a rare émigré edition banned by Soviet censors. Nikolai Nikolaevich Turoverov (1899–1972) – poet, Don Cossack, officer in the Russian and White armies, participant in the First World War, the Civil War and the Second World War. He was actively involved in efforts to preserve Russian culture in exile. In the Soviet Union, his poems were popular among the Cossacks and were secretly copied; legends about Turoverov circulated among the Cossacks. The only Cossack poet to express, with such power and poignancy, the pain of exile and the longing for the Cossack way of life that had been destroyed.
